Other Scheduled Activities:
Sacred Sweat Lodge (Inipi) Ceremony
Materials Fee: $25 plus offering to the presenter
A Sweat Lodge may be described as a Native American prayer and purification ceremony, a cleansing and affirmation of the spirit. In a Sweat Lodge, a frame of saplings is covered with hides or blankets. Stones are heated in a fire, and then placed in a pit in the center of the lodge. Water is then poured on the stones to create hot steam. Participants sit around the fire in a circle, and are guided through the ceremony.
Sweat Lodges can be arduous. Eat only eat a light meal beforehand. Wear loose clothing—you will sweat. Please note that women on their moon (menstrual) cycle are asked to refrain from participation because of the powerful flow of energy they’re already undergoing.
Both Sweat Lodges will be conducted by Nunpa, a kind and wise man who has led the Sweat Lodges for our Breitenbush retreats for over 10 years. Register early since each of the sweats will fill up fast.
In addition to the materials fee, it is customary after the Sweat Lodge to make offerings to the leader and fire tender, such as pipe tobacco, spiritual gifts, food, or money.
